Tbilisi Saburtalo Hotel by Mercure Overview

I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Tbilisi Saburtalo Hotel by Mercure, but this place really surprised me in the best way possible. The Saburtalo district isn’t exactly where most tourists end up staying, which is actually part of its charm. You’re in a proper residential neighborhood where real Georgians live their daily lives, and there’s something refreshing about that authenticity you don’t get in the old town tourist bubble.

What struck me immediately was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about getting things right – not in that overly scripted hotel way, but more like they actually wanted you to have a good time in Tbilisi. The lobby has this clean, modern vibe without feeling sterile, and honestly, the whole place feels more polished than a lot of four-star hotels I’ve stayed in. The rooms are spacious (which is saying something for Georgia), and I mean actually spacious, not just “spacious for Europe” spacious. The beds are proper comfortable, and you know what? The shower pressure is fantastic – something you can’t always count on in this part of the world. I also appreciated that the air conditioning actually works well, which matters more than you’d think during those humid Tbilisi summers.

The location is one of those things that seems inconvenient until you realize it’s actually perfect. Sure, you’re not stumbling distance from Rustaveli Avenue, but you’re close enough to the metro that getting around is easy, and the neighborhood itself has this great mix of local restaurants and cafes that tourists never find. There’s a decent grocery store within walking distance, which came in handy more than once. The area gets quiet at night – not dead quiet, just peaceful residential quiet – so you’ll actually sleep well. During the day, you can hear the sounds of normal city life, but it never felt intrusive. Plus, parking here is infinitely easier than trying to navigate a car through the old town’s narrow streets. The hotel’s restaurant serves solid Georgian food without the tourist markup you get closer to the sights, and their khachapuri is legitimately good (I had it three times, so that should tell you something). What really sealed the deal for me was the little details – the elevators work smoothly, the WiFi is reliable throughout the building, and the housekeeping staff pays attention to things like actually replacing the coffee pods daily. It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable settling in for more than just a quick overnight stop.
