I stumbled into Tbilisi on a rainy Thursday evening, only to find myself parked at 86 Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue, floor 2, apartment 1. The building is a squat, Soviet block that’s oddly charming once you get past the peeling paint on the lobby door. The air coming from the broken air‑conditioner in the hallway is a mix of stale city smell and the distant scent of frying khachapuri from a stall on the corner – a welcome hint that I’m in the right neighborhood.

When I knocked, the front desk was a bright, modern space with a wall of photos from local events. The staff were friendly enough to ask what kind of trip I was on, and the check‑in was surprisingly quick – no long wait, no heavy paperwork. They handed me a keycard that worked for the elevator and the apartment door, and a small map that actually highlighted the nearest metro station (the Chugureti stop) and the bus lines that take you straight to the Old Town. The apartment itself is a cozy studio, 19 square meters of well‑planned space: a soft couch that turns into a bed (you can tell the mattress is good after the first night), a tiny kitchenette with a two‑stage stove, a fridge, and a washer/dryer combo that’s handy for longer stays. The walls are painted in a warm, neutral tone that makes the natural light from the window feel like a hug. The tiny balcony, though only a sliver, offers a view of the street – you can hear the chatter of locals, the occasional clink of a coffee cup, and sometimes the distant church bells from Metekhi.

Honestly, the biggest surprise was the noise level. Even though the apartment is in a residential area, the city never really sleeps. At night, you can hear the distant traffic from the avenue, the hum of the metro, and at 2 a.m. the occasional siren. The walls do a decent job of muffling it, but if you’re a light sleeper, you might want to bring earplugs. The apartment has blackout curtains, so you can sleep through the morning sun if you need to. The only real downside is the lack of a dedicated parking spot. I parked on the street, which is fine most days, but during the summer, when the local markets are busy, you have to circle a few blocks to find a spot. It’s worth it, though, because the apartment is a stone’s throw from the Tbilisi Zoo – I spent an afternoon there, watching the giraffes and laughing at the children. The local market on Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue is a must‑visit: fresh produce, midges on the corner, and the smell of fresh bread that makes you want to stay an extra hour.

What I loved most was the sense of community. The building has a small garden that the residents share, where I met a couple from Tbilisi’s Old Town who offered me some homemade khinkali. They told me about the best time to visit the TV Tower – early morning for the sunrise, or late evening for the city lights. I also discovered that the metro station is just a 5‑minute walk away, and on a rainy day the underground can be a lifesaver. For a 4‑star rating of 9.4, the apartment delivers on comfort and authenticity. It’s not a hotel chain, so you get that personal touch that makes a trip feel like a homecoming. If you’re planning a stay in the city, I’d say Gio’s Apartment is your go‑to spot for a quiet, authentic Georgia experience – minus the tourist traps and with a genuine sense of place that only locals can offer.
