You know what caught me off guard about Communal Hotel Plekhanovi? The name had me expecting some sort of Soviet-era throwback, but honestly, this place is nothing like that. I mean, sure, there’s definitely some nod to the history in the design – you’ll see it in the lobby’s industrial touches and the way they’ve mixed vintage elements with surprisingly modern comfort. But it’s done in this really thoughtful way that doesn’t feel gimmicky at all.

The thing that really struck me was how they’ve nailed this balance between being genuinely social (hence the “communal” part, I guess) and still giving you space to breathe. The common areas actually work – I saw people hanging out there in the evenings, not just rushing through to get to their rooms. The staff seemed to know their stuff too, which you don’t always get at four-star places. Check-in was smooth, no weird surprises with the room when I got up there. Actually, the room was better than I expected – clean lines, good lighting, and thank god, a shower with actual water pressure. Sometimes it’s the little things, right?

What I really appreciated was that this place doesn’t try too hard. It’s got that 9.1 rating for good reason, but it earns it through solid execution rather than flashy extras you’ll never use. The location works well if you want to be in the mix of things – close enough to walk to the interesting spots but not so central that you’re dealing with constant street noise. I slept fine, which honestly is my main test for any hotel. Breakfast was decent too, nothing revolutionary but fresh and with enough variety that you won’t get bored if you’re staying a few days. The whole vibe just felt… authentic, I guess? Like someone actually thought about what travelers need instead of just checking boxes on some corporate hospitality list.

  Very clean, pleasantly decorated room, free filtered water and tea/coffee, friendly staff downstairs. Great price for the quality of the stay (about £58 for one night). All night check-in. Toothbrush/toothpaste and lots of towels provided, and the hotel shampoo/conditioner was of good quality.
